Start Planning Your Garden Now

If you want to learn the Edward Weston Style of food photography (minus the large format camera part); think about what specifically do you want to photograph. You need to start planning out your year and now is a good time to start thinking about what you want to put in your gardens for photography. If you plan what you want to photograph now, you can plan your garden so you don't have to buy everything at the store. I'm thinking that once a month would be a good place to start for planning. Good bye Kodak

There are many things that made me a bit sad when I heard the news that Kodak is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The part that makes me the most sad is this could have been avoided. Kodak's biggest failure was not moving further into the digital market because they were afraid of dealing a blow to their cash cow film. Their second failure was not realizing if they didn't expand their digital market share, they would loose in all their other market shares because everyone else would eat into their business by going digital. This should have been glaringly obvious by 2003 shortly after the canon 10D was introduced. Kodak started to lose market share in the digital realm because their only DSLR had a $8,000 list price for a mere 14MP and small ISO range compared to the Canon 10D which was priced for market domination at $1500. Photographers flocked to the Canon 10D, and then to the Canon 20D, eventually Kodak killed their DSLR line shoving their Customers out the door to buy Canon or eventually Nikon.

Despite Kodak being a powerhouse of innovation and having developed digital cameras some 40 years ago, a few increasingly dumb mistakes have killed the company when tied to the current economic times. Failure to change and adapt, as well as fear of growing one market to be their new cash cow at the expense of their existing cash cow market is the real story that killed Kodak.

All that is left is the hope that Kodak might salvage itself and restructure to be more like their rival Fuji. Or we can hope that the thousands of Kodak patents will eventually find their way into the hands of some companies that will be able to bring some cool stuff like color filter 2.0 i.e. RGBW to market for every professional.

Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3 system requirements

I'm often asked about system requirements for Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5 because of my IT background.

Sigma still doesn't get it! SD1 is not a 46MP camera

Photokina 2010 came and went without many big industry changing anouncments, over all thisyear could be summed up as more of the same. Some interesting products were announced; most notible was Leaf's Aptus-II 12 and Aptus-II 12R medium format 80MP digital backs, (mind numbingly large mega pixel backs). Then there was Sigma who showed off their "46 MP" SD1 digital SLR.

Let's cut to the chase, Sigma has still got it wrong after aquireing foveon, their grand new SD1 camera's sensor is only 4800 x 3200 x 3 layers as I hav e commented about other x3 chips, that is only 4800 x 3200 in resoluton or about 15.34MP. While it's color depth is 4800 x 3200 x 3 layers or about 15.34MP per RGB channel totaling 46MP of pure COLOR resolution. As I commented last year (not knowing that sigma had aquired foveon) this is not high enough in pure resolution for quality professional work. As a professional photographer I would want something in the 21MP resolution range and 63MP pure color resolution and full frame, not a x1.7 APS-C crop sensor.

On the upside this is the first camera that Sigma/foveon has released that meets a minimum in wedding camera needs. In fact due to the lower noise and higher overall sharpness this might be a great camera for wedding or photo journalism. No word on price or on ISO range so it's anyone's guess on if this would be worth the cost of buying, or owning. But this is a good step towards the right direction, if they step it up in the next year and put out a full frame "63MP" x3 camera, with HD video and an ISO range of 100-25600, at a price point of $2000-3000 it would peak some interest for me.

Step it up FOVEON and Kodak

It's been over half a decade since FOVEON released their X3(R) triple layer sensor cmos chip, and we are still waiting for them to make a move to be serious in the photography market. As I see it they made two big mistakes: First, is interpolating their chips, by calling their 3.4MP per layer chip a 10.2mp chip most of us lost trust. We want to see a 10.2mp per layer sensor called 10.2mp, not some interpolated ego inflation. With the 3.4mp chip you only have 3.4mp of resolution and 10.2mp of color. We love the Idea of higher color quality but we want the resolution too. Yes, you can interpolate the resolution up, but that results in problems similar to traditional Bayer sensors. Give us better color with the resolution, we want 20+mp with accurate color recorded at each pixel. The second mistake was not licensing the technology to kodak, Fuji, sony, canon, nikon, or phase-one. By only selling chips to simga they have locked their technology into niche markets with out getting it into the hands of commercial photographers who want the color advantages the X3 chip provides without getting stuck in a system that isn't industry standard.

Kodak, released info on a new filter that is better that the old Bayer filter in 2007. Called color filter 2.0 or RGBW they added a luminance channel to the standard red, green, and blue channels. There are some clear advantages to this including, lower noise, better color, and more realistic motion. To date there is no information on professional level cameras that use this technology.

Step it up Foveon and Kodak, we want your technology available for professional use so we can make better images.

Revolutions that are changing photography

I just got done reading an interesting article on "good enough" http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/magazine/17-09/ff_goodenough?currentPage=1

I got to thinking about all the changes for good or ilk that are currently happening in the Photography industry. The odd thing is how many people think what's happening is totally new. Truth is photography is such a new medium that it is breaths a culture of change and trends. The most over whelming change that is currently happening is the Digital "good enough" revolution. Everyone imagines themselves as photographers; now with a cheap digital camera, and easy to use digital editing software almost anyone can be a "good enough" photographer. Now I'm not talking being a real professional photographer, just a better than a Walmart or Kiddie Kandids photographer. This revolution shouldn't surprise anyone who lived through the Digital desktop publishing revolution. In the desktop publishing revolution of the early 1990's cheap software made almost anyone a publisher. It took nearly a decade for people to see the real difference in good design from someone who truly knows how to layout information for publication and Desktop Publishing's "good enough" model. We should expect a similar out come with Photography's Desktop Photography Revolution. Overall It means some Photographers which were only "good enough" at the beginning of digital photography will have to get better or go out of business. The good enough model will take over some areas of product photography just like stock photography took over some areas of assignment photography.

The only reason the gap between skilled amateur and professional photographers is shrinking; has more to do with a failure of professional photographers in raising the bar, than it does with everyone having a digital camera. There has been a "good enough" mentality with many professional photographers that has left the bar too low. too many Professionals feel they only bring technical skills to the table, too many photography schools only teach technical skills. Is is any wonder when better tools that are easier to use come to market, that skilled amateurs become on par with professionals who are only defined by technical skills?

The mixed media revolution is the next area of so called change in photography. This is just a return to the ideals of the pictorialist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There will be niches in the field for this style, but this will not redefine photography. If anything, mixed media will make straight photography more important in the same way that the pictorialist movement did.

Video is another area of change in photography. More videographers are shooting stills and more photographers are doing video. This is a major change in both fields, as neither field truly has had the ability to easily shoot in the other media. Some people are trying to define themselves as only Stills or only video. There maybe some room for single media specialists, but in many areas Photographers and videographers are expected to shoot both. This is most evident in news media where wire services like the AP are wanting or expecting their photographers and videographers to shoot both stills and video. We will have to wait to see what the full effect and what industry demands will play out in this area. I would speculate that the term videographer will go by the wayside and the term photographers will include video services.

We can try to fight these changes, but the best way to fight it is to raise the bar and redefine what it means to be professional.

I'm not finding anything that I can throw my weight behind that has the same beauty of simplicity as the Julie/Julia project did. If anyone out there has a good photography related book that you think I should look at for my project please pass it along. If there is anyone in the Salt lake area who likes to cook and wants to do their own Julia project and let me photograph it...that might work....warning Julie/Julia projects can burn a person out and fry relationships, take careful consideration before attempting.

Clouds and more Julie & Julia

I continue to muse about Julie & Julia, I am considering options for my own Julie & Julia project.

Before I get into talking about my Julie & Julia project, I want to talk about Julie & Julia and how great Meryl Streep is. If I didn't know Meryl Streep was playing Julia Childs I would have believed Julia Childs had traveled from the past to play herself in the movie. I can not say enough about Meryl Streep's abity to mimic a person in every detail.

Back to my project.....A cookbook is easy to pick up and start a project from but most photography books don't lend themselves to such a parideim. I have a collection of Timelife books on photography from 1982. There are eleven books in all about photography, from color to the studio, from Art to Photographic problems. It is a wonderful series on photography. I am considering the timelife series as the foundation of my project. I need to define to project and the project goals, If I'm going to under take this project.

Julie & Julia sneak preview

Last night we got to see the sneak preview Julie & Julia. It was very inspirational. Who would have thought that a personal writing/cooking project could turn into a book and movie. The movie has many witty and funny comments. It also shows much of the ups and downs of writing a blog and completing a self directed project. The story is also about making your dreams come true following a midlife crisis.

There is a theme of self realization of wanting some something to do, of wanting to be more then just an office worker or just a housewife. For Julie it was seeing the success of her so called friends and wanting more then the suffering her job provided. For Julia it was going to professional cooking school because she was good at cooking.

Some of my favorite lines was from Julia "never apologize" and "you should have seen how those men looked at me, then they realized I was fearless" I wish I would have taken a notebook with me to jot down the hundreds of great lines in Julie & Julia. I would say that the movie had a consistent timing for great lines with an almost mathematical precision to the placement.

For myself I walked out of the movie wanting to start my own year blog project. I'm pondering how to set up such a project and keep it Photography related. It's not like there is a photography equivalent to a cookbook with recipes.

Hello everyone out there (or should I just say hello Brandon, since he is the only one following this blog to my knowledge)

Never the less hello to those of you who are reading! Sorry no Images for this blog but I did want to let you in on something I'm working on for the main website. It's a basic guide to the concepts of pricing assignment photography. I hope you, and anyone else who reads it, finds the guide informative. Let me know what you think and if this guide helps you please share your story.

Our purpose in developing and publishing this guide is to help our clients establish an ongoing business relationship with us, where our clients can negotiate in an informed and cooperative environment that benefits both the photographer and the client. We expect this guide will also help other photographers understand the principles of pricing photography.
There are four keys to hiring the right photographer the first time.
1. Define your photographic needs.
2. Hire the photographer who fits the assignment.
3. Look for value instead of shopping for price.
4. Discuss rights issues up front when negotiating a fee.
Licensing agreements should answer the basic questions of who will use the photograph, for what purpose, where will it appear and for how long will it be used.

There are three main areas to consider in pricing photography services:

Fees
Expenses
Usage license.

Fees:
As in any free market, creative fees will vary greatly among photographers. It's easy to get caught in the trap of shopping price instead of looking for value. With Walt Sorensen Photography we seek to provide our clients with more than just images, we seek to provide value in their photographs. All photographic assignments have a fee component and an expense component. The fees cover the costs to my business for salary, time, overhead, equipment, training and profit. Although many people still use the term day rate, few Professional Photographers have a standard day rate. We use creative fees rather than day rates and the creative fee includes the value of our creative services. Each project is special and will have specific fees associated with it. Please call or write for fees associated with a particular project.

Expenses:
The Expenses are the incremental costs associated with a particular job, such as Freelance Assistant, travel, props, film and digital processing, related production charges, post production and delivery charges. Listed below are the typical production charges associated with digital capture and delivery. Each project is unique and will have specific expenses associated with it. Please call or write for expenses associated with a particular project.

Image Usage License:
Image usage is the most miss understood area of photography pricing and is the area where most people, clients and photographers, make the biggest mistakes.
There are 4 main questions to consider in licensing an image:
1) Where will the photography be used? In answering this question we are defining the geographic market where the image is used. Typical regions are local, regional or national.
2) How long will the photography be used for? In answering this question we are defining the time frame the image will be used for. Typically limited to a length of time, but can be limited to a press run or a single ad campaign (see question 4 on reproductions of images).
3) Where is the Image/ad being placed? On a billboard, website, or back cover of a magazine? In answering this question we are defining the visibility of the image. Is the image being used for a 1/4 page ad or a two page spread. The size can affects the resolution of final master files. Where placement affects the final visibility or how many people will see the image/ad
4) How many times will the image be reproduced? In answering this question we are defining the number of uses of an image. This relates to the circulation of a magazine or newspaper, or the press run for a brochure, etc.

No, two people have the same needs for the use of an image. Would a client be willing to pay for 10 years of use as a double spread in a million circulation national magazine for an image that would be used only once in a single local publication? I think not.

The additional questions to consider answering with specific licensing language are:
Who can use the photography?
Where can the photography be used?
How long can the photography be used?
Are the needs for the licensing unlimited or limited to a length of time or press run, etc?
Will the photography be used in advertising, editorial or collateral media?
Will it appear locally, regionally or nationally?
Is the photography exclusive to the client for a period of time?
Can the photographer re-license the images (or out-takes) to others?
Is a non-compete clause necessary to protect the proprietary nature of the photography?
(non-compete clauses typically have a maximum enforceable life of about 7 years in Utah)

A basic sample license might read: “Exclusive use in local trade advertising by ABC Co. for one year.”

Many people also make the mistake of wasting money on buying unlimited usage of an image or buying a copyright when they have limited usage needs. Avoid using the term "buyout"; it has no legal meaning and is subject to different interpretations. Buying the copyright could greatly increase your costs without changing the value that the image has to you. Realistic usage needs should be weighed against budget considerations. Why pay more for something you might not need? Future licensing can be purchased as needed. We have found the fairest model for licensing to be one that charges the license granted according to the client's usage needs, rather than a general license usage. Please call or write discuss your license needs associated with a particular project.

Pay attention to your license.
Images are licensed for specific uses, and that information is included on the contract or invoice. It is up to the client to manage the usage of the image internally. Rights not specifically granted are reserved to the photographer. Possession of digital files or photographic prints does not give one the right to reproduce or copy them. Electronic files should be destroyed after the period of the license has expired. New files will be sent with any relicensing purchase, there is no need to destroy files or to send new file if the relicensing is completed before the original license expires.
Are you seeking an estimate or a bid? Let us make it clear which one you are asking for.
Estimates are an appraisal of what the job should cost. Estimates have the limitation of being based only upon the information provided. If you forget an important detail, like, we need you in New York tomorrow and the master files the same day of the shoot, the estimate will be inaccurate. Estimates are only given in a non-competitive situation, if there are other photographers submitting, then it's a bid. Estimates are more flexible then bids allowing for some small changes to fit within the frame work of the estimate.

There are two types of bids: competitive and comparative.
Competitive Bid: Bids are considered competitive when two or more bids being considered only on price.
Comparative bid: these are bids that encompass additional aspects like style, existing working relationship, availability, etc.
In any bidding situation, all parties should have the same information and assignment criteria.Unlike an estimate, once a bid is accepted, the price is fixed - but so are the job parameters. Even small changes may incur additional charges. In situations that require changes, the change must be approved in writing at the time of the change.

Distinguish between your wants and your needs. Instead of cutting corners on quality, look for getting greater value from your photography dollar. There are always ways to pay less for photography - but bargains can be expensive. The expertise of the photographer will save money in the long run. Be open and honest with the photographer when negotiating your assignment. Good communications can help you solve your problems and achieve your goals.

It's been about 5 years in the making, Learning about panoramas and acquiring equipment. But, at long last I have everything to do Panoramas. With this month's addition of a 11-18mm lens to my arsenal and last years Bogan 303 plus pano head, we bring together some magic editing and presto a Panorama. (perhaps we will aquire a panorama tour software package to enhance the experiance.) For now it's just one image, soon I'll add more panoramas of locations and such

Ever have one of those days when you know you know how to shoot something and no mater how hard you try you can't remember what the rules for shooting are?

I have, last Friday I was playing around practicing my underutilized photoshop and studio photography skills. As I was shooting I realized I had not extracted any images from backgrounds in years (no need to with the straight photography I usually do) so I had to refresh myself on how to shoot studio for extracting and what to do to extract. Then I found I could not remember how to shoot highly reflective objects (a bane of photography in any case) Monday I realized what I did wrong, on the reflective object, I put a white screen in front rather then a black screen.

I also had to take some time to remember how to make an object cast a shadow in photoshop. Now some of you are probably wondering why I would mention this. I just wanted to note that I'm shooting a lot of straight photography and not doing any studio work right now. What is important is I take time to keep my photography skills sharp for my clients ( you never know when you will be asked to shoot something a little different then your typical style)

Since I have been reprimanded for my lack of blogging I shall post this...

I recently got an email with the following photo of mine and this message

"Man... I love rippin' off photos from the web! Catch you later, brother.
Jared... in Arizona"

at least he told me, and it's for his enjoyment.

But far too often people steal photos and call it thier own photo. shouldn't we give credit where credit is due?
